Artist Statement
The objective of my work is to cultivate reverence for connection. Connection to self, to community, to nature, and to routine.
Ceramic's ability to fulfill the service of function is what initially captivated me. Growing up with little, manifested a need to create work that serves a utilitarian purpose, beyond the joy of viewing. I discovered that ceramics have the unique capacity for both function and beauty. In this way ceramics connects me to my childhood.
As I get older, community becomes increasingly vital to me, showing up in it, growing it, and maintaining it. I began noticing floral iconography in communities I’m a part of, and integrating them into my surface design as a means of cultivating connection. The repetitive process of functional wheel-thrown ceramics holds a mirror to the daily routines of those utilizing the finished work, this parallel connects us.
Clay as a material holds great power in reminding me of how interwoven humanity is with the earth. It’s clear as a human race we are taking from the earth more than we are giving. With gratitude for the resource, my work is created to intentionally show what nature's beauty looks like when it is nourished. Though clay comes from the ground, it comes to my studio in a plastic bag. When that plastic bag is empty I take it and fill it with trash that litters my neighborhood. This act is as much a part of my art practice as wheel-throwing is, it serves as a critical connection point to self, to community, to nature, and to routine.
